FROM EXPLORATION TO MINING PROJECT

As a result of its exploration work, Orano’s subsidiary discovered the Dulaan Uul deposit in 2002 and the world-class Zuuvch Ovoo deposit in 2010, significantly increasing Mongolia’s overall uranium resources and putting it 12th in the world in terms of countries with the most uranium reserves.

Since these results were obtained, Orano has been working alongside its partner to make Badrakh Energy, the company responsible for the scope of uranium production, operational in line with the Shareholders’ Agreement signed in October 2013.

Today, the Badrakh Energy project is at the most advanced stage of the uranium mining development process in Mongolia.
From July 2021 to December 2022, Badrakh Energy conducted an on-site pilot test for uranium extraction from the Zuuvch Ovoo deposit by the ISR (in-situ recovery) mining method.

Badrakh Energy produced 10 metric tons of natural uranium concentrate and confirmed that the ISR mining method applied at Zuuvch Ovoo is safe both for people and the environment.

During the pilot operations, the Cooperation Agreement with local communities and associated governance were successfully implemented. 22 social development projects with a total budget of near 2 billions MNT have received support from the company.

Over the life of the mine that is forecast to last 30 years, the Zuuvch-Ovoo project has the potential to bring the following benefits to Mongolia:

  • 1.6 Bn USD of direct investment over the life time of the project
  • 1 Bn USD in tax income at national and local level

As a responsible miner, Orano is committed to developing the first uranium mine in Mongolia in line with the highest standards in terms of health, safety and the environment, as well as social responsibility.
