New AREVA’s EOS Dry Storage System Approved for Highest Heat-load Used Nuclear

Washington, D.C., July 31, 2017 – AREVA TN, the nuclear logistics affiliate of New AREVA, has received certification for its NUHOMS® Extended Optimized Storage (EOS) dry used fuel storage system from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

This new generation dry shielded canister offers nuclear utilities a cost-effective storage solution for the unique requirements of high burn-up fuel management and reactors in shutdown phase.

At 50 kW, the NUHOMS EOS performs at the highest heat load capacity certified by the NRC. Advanced designs and materials for the internal basket structure and external storage overpack achieve significantly improved high heat dispersal. This allows utilities to transfer thermally hot used fuel quicker from a nuclear reactor pool to a secure NUHOMS EOS dry storage system.

The NUHOMS EOS provides customers with a high-capacity system accommodating 37 pressurized water reactor (PWR) and 89 boiling water reactor (BWR) fuel assemblies.

The new system also goes a step further in terms of nuclear safety. New integrated devices simplify access for probes during inspections and aging management procedures as extended onsite dry storage becomes a more common necessity. The canister’s robust design also offers certainty of the stored used fuel during any extreme weather or seismic events.

“Our NUHOMS EOS system’s high-heat load and high-capacity capabilities expand the range of options for customers’ used fuel management strategies. It sets a new standard on the market,” said Frédéric de Agostini, executive vice president, AREVA TN. “The NUHOMS EOS is part of our commitment to bring our customers efficient and competitive solutions, fully aligned with their business issues, with no compromise on safety.”
