Orano is moving into a new phase of mining, undertaking several projects which will require technical expertise and ongoing stewardship from a hydrogeologist who is interested in being a part of a growing team focusing on program development. Orano supports research and development programs, including (but not limited to) updating of contaminant transport models, and developing reactive contaminant transport models, work on which we are seeking to begin in 2025. Additionally, Orano has recently decommissioned the Cluff Lake mine in Northwestern Saskatchewan and handed the property back to the province under the Institutional Control Program (ICP). Orano is committed to incorporating lessons learned from Cluff Lake into current and future progressive decommissioning projects and is seeking to develop internal hydrogeological expertise to this purpose. This position will be a part of the Safety, Health, Environment and Regulatory Department which is a diverse team leading collaborations with internal and university partners, and our larger Orano Group based in France.
Responsibilities include:
· Provide leadership and maintain hydrogeological expertise in the areas of groundwater management and monitoring of mining projects, and the design and evaluation of waste management facilities for Orano’s Canadian properties
· Update, improve, and prepare new numerical and analytical solutions related to groundwater flow and solute transport with the goal of:
o predicting mine water inflows
o assessing short- and long-term interactions between mining and waste management facilities and the environment
o progressively decommission facilities towards acceptance into the Saskatchewan ICP
· Research and development of improved/new groundwater models, management, and monitoring programs in accordance with relevant standards
· Prepare documentation in support of engineering/scientific studies, environmental assessments, follow up programs, and licensing of mining and related projects
· Design and implement hydrogeological field programs and provide interpretation of the results
· Present modelling results to stakeholders (employees, regulators, and local communities)
· Embrace and support Operational Excellence efforts and OE Culture
· Participate and build relationships with internal and external working groups/ committees.
· Maintain a positive HSE culture within the company and comply with all Orano health, safety and environmental policies, practices, and procedures
Work Location & Schedule:
· Saskatoon Corporate Office.
· Travel to McClean Lake or project sites as required (one week per month on approximate frequency)
Skills and Qualifications for the position include:
· Degree in Engineering or Geology; a graduate degree with specialization in hydrogeology or geotechnical engineering is preferred.
· Minimum 5 years’ experience in hydrogeology
· Experience in numerical modeling of groundwater flow and solute transport
· Experience designing, planning, and implementing hydrogeological and geotechnical field studies and monitoring programs
· Registered or eligible for registration with APEGS
· Proficient in the analysis and application of hydrogeological and geotechnical data to the design and analysis of mining and waste management facilities and their interactions with the environment
· Familiarity with uranium mining industry and regulatory processes would be an asset
· Excellent communication, inter-personal and organizational skills with the ability to work both independently and with various individuals, stakeholders, and teams
· Able to develop positive working relationships and work closely and effectively with all team members
· Ability to co-ordinate activities, information, and materials within own area of responsibility to meet deadlines
· Excellent analytical skills to problem solve, plan, and organize priorities effectively
· Ability to communicate complex topics clearly to, and engage with, a variety of stakeholders
· Ability to excel in a multi-disciplined team environment
