CIME won the 2024 A3TS innovation prize thanks to the ScaVanger project

Last June in Toulouse, the CIME won the 2024 innovation prize from the A3TS (Association for Thermal and Surface Treatments) with the European project: ScaVanger.

This project is directly linked to the issues of materials eco-circularity. The object of the innovation: Scandium (Sc) extraction from a by-product from the european titanium industry.

There is currently no production of scandium (Sc) in Europe, more than 60% of world production originates in China. However, Sc presents interesting properties for new Al-Sc alloys intended for the aeronautical and automobile transport sectors. Light and ductile combined with aluminum, it offers increased flexibility and a lighter weight than the alloys currently used in aeronautics,”reports our Project Manager, Dr Pierre Feydi.

Scandium has a high potential growth market over the next 10 years thanks to its use for the transport sector but also to its applications as a catalyst in the manufacture of fuel cells. Thanks to the extraction of scandium present in by-products from European titanium industry, the European Union and its industries will benefit from a sovereign supply of scandium to fully engage in the development of tomorrow's technologies.

It is 23 women and men who made it possible to successfully carry out this project at CIME. Let’s congratulate them!
